Social Activities on the weekend

What do boarders do on weekends?

To Top

The Social Committee ensures students have opportunities to take part in scheduled and spontaneous events throughout the entire year.  Almost every weekend, boarding students can partake in an array of activities. This year, students have played laser tag and paintball, went skiing, shopping, had movie nights in residence, basketball and volleyball tournaments.

Weekend activities are a key element of life in the Albert College community.  Typically, they start in September with a "Welcome to Albert" dance and paintball. In October we get together to watch scary movies and set the tone for the frightfully fun Halloween Dance. To finish the first term, students talents are displayed in a Coffee House and generally they get ready for the holidays with a shopping trip to Toronto.

After the holidays, the first major event is generally the Valentine's Semi-formal dinner and dance.  Later a visit to Canada's Parliament Buildings and the National Art Gallery.  No trek to Ottawa is complete without the traditional activities of skating on the Rideau Canal and shopping at the historic Market.

In addition to all these activities, the Social Committee plans movie nights, outings to some of our great area beaches and a trip to Wonderland, one of our country's premiere theme parks.

Reporting and Advisors

Is there any sort of support system or advisor program?

To Top

Yes, each student has an Advisor whom they see every day and meet with 3 days a week.  It is the role of this teacher to keep up to date on the student’s performance academically, socially, in athletics and residence.  The Advisor is the liaison between other staff, the Assistant Head of School and with parents.

Students also have extra help sessions 2 days per week where they can meet with their teachers.

Do you have an ESL program for students that need to improve their English skills?

To Top

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed to help students acquire the English language skills necessary to succeed in all courses in which English is the language of instruction at both the secondary and post-secondary level.

All students are tested early in the school year to determine a suitable ESL course offered at one of five levels, A through E. For ESL students who are graduating, we offer a graduate ESL tutorial to improve essay and examination writing skills and TOEFL test preparation. Our goal is to help students make the transition to the core English program in a timely fashion so that they will take core English in grade 10 if they have completed ESL level D or they will take core English in grade 11 or 12 if they have completed ESL level E. Up to three ESL courses will count towards diploma requirements and students may advance through two levels of ESL in one year, earning one credit.

Financial Aid

Who can apply for financial aid?

To Top

Anyone can apply for financial aid.  Most recipients’ household income is in the $60,000 to $100,000 range. It is important for applicants to realize that the assistance program is meant to supplement, not to replace the family’s financial commitment.  The income of families receiving aid varies from $40,000 to $130,000.  Only students who have been admitted by the Admission Committee can be considered for aid. Requests regularly exceed the financial aid budget.  However, with the significant sacrifices families are prepared to make for students receiving aid, the majority of students accepted are able to attend.

How is financial aid determined?

To Top

Albert College provides the Financial Aid for Canadian Students (FACS) application form and FACS uses a standard formula to determine the needs of each family.  Consideration of income, expenses, assets and debts, age, size of family and the number of children at tuition paying schools and universities establishes the need. The school’s Financial Aid Committee then determines an award that may be a bursary or a combination of scholarship and bursary.
