Albert College Back-to-Back Soccer Champs!

The Albert College Senior Boys’ Soccer team claimed its second consecutive CISAA Division III Soccer Championship Friday. In claiming 1st place overall, Albert also completed its second consecutive season of undefeated league play by topping Rosseau Lake College 3-0 in the semi final and outlasting Appleby College 2-1 in an epic final.

Nigerian striker, Lotanna Eze, and German midfielder, Christoph Frey, led the Panthers offensively. Chardo Quinn of Bermuda and Mitchell Torres of Quinte West provided solid backfield play.

Albert College dominated its league opposition this season, scoring 44 goals while conceding only 11. With many starters returning next year for their senior season, Head Coach, Scott Mills is optimistic about the future. “We have a great core of players returning next year and I think we have an excellent chance to ‘3-peat’ next season.”

Top Ten Questions to Ask when searching for the Best Independent School

There is no greater decision than where to educate your child. Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) has done the research to determine Canada’s best schools. Of the thousands of independent schools in Canada, only 90 meet the highest of National Standards, including Albert College.

Here are ten of the most important questions to ask in searching for the best independent school:

1. Is the school accredited by CAIS? Check the Directory for the list of schools that go beyond Ministry expectations and meet National Standards in all areas of programs and operations at www.cais.ca.

2. What is the curriculum approach - A.P., I.B., Reggio Emilia, Waldorf, Montessori? How will the learning environment best support the needs of my child?

3. What are the advantages of single sex vs co-educational? Small vs large? City vs. rural? What environment will best challenge my child?

4. Is there an option to board? How might boarding best suit my child?

5. What will I be expected to pay, beyond tuition?

6. What co-curricular and leadership options are available?

7. What is the Mission and Vision of the school? What are the Values? What evidence is there that the school lives these statements?

8. Is there anything different or unique about the faculty? What are their qualifications? What is the student-teacher ratio?

9. How does the campus feel? What facilities are special?

10. How do the people I’ve met at the school interact with my child?

Q & A with Alumnus, Phil Pallen ’06

Phil Pallen ’06 was one of 88,000 people who applied for Two and a Half Men actor, Charlie Sheen’s summer internship. The internship process generated much media attention but so to did Phil - creating a social media campaign, branding himself as “Tiger Blood Phil” and turning heads across Canada and the U.S. He has since decided to put his social media expertise to the test in Hollywood instead of waiting for the final results. We checked in with Phil to see what he was up to.

Q. Did you ever expect to get this much attention for your “Tiger Blood Phil” campaign?
A. I absolutely did not expect it. On the other hand, I was ready for it. The timing was great because 6 months prior, I switched my personal brand up and finished my new website, demo reel and portfolio. So then I was flooded with press, but it was great because I got a ton of exposure. I loved every second of it and I thanked everyone who supported me individually from the beginning of my campaign. That’s a big part of it.

Q. What has happened since the campaign?

A. I actually graduated from my Masters Degree in Entertainment Business this year on a Thursday around 4:30 p.m. I received the "Advanced Achiever" award and gave my graduation class' speech. Two hours later I was on a plane en-route to Hollywood.

Q. What was the first thing that you did when you got to L.A.?

A. The first thing I did when I got out here - I had my mom with me for a few days, and we rented a car and drove through Beverley Hills. We passed Jennifer Lopez, saw a bunch of celebrity homes, and we had a blast.

Q. What are you up to in L.A.?

A. I am now freelancing as a social media consultant here in L.A. and I'm helping small businesses and people in the "Baby boomer" generation embrace social media and all that it has to offer.

Q. Where do you go now from here?

A. For a long time I've wanted to be a TV Host, and while at AC I was involved with the drama productions with Ms. Austin-Profit and public speaking and such. It was also in Grade 12 when I was hosting my first TV show, Skooled, on TVO Kids. The most exciting thing in my life right now is that I'm training with a woman named Marki Costello, who is the hosting coach to the stars. She trains and represents some of the most successful TV hosts in Hollywood, including hosts on E!, TV Guide, and a number of game shows.

Q. What did you take away from Albert College that has helped you on this journey?

A. I can't say enough about my experience at AC. The school taught me about discipline, respect and success. Aside from my mom raising me to achieve, I think AC has been one of the more influential factors in my life.

Q. What advice can you give to students and grads who want to get into the media field and do what you do?
A. Get ready for fierce competition, but don’t let it dissuade you from pursuing your dreams. I don’t know what will happen tomorrow job-wise, or anything-wise. Neither do you. So make sure you spend today preparing yourself for what might come fast. Don’t wait for opportunity. Seek it. Think long and hard about how you want to be interpreted by others, and develop a brand that is distinct, likeable, attractive, and you. Image is a big part of the industry. Combine it with an eager, humble attitude and passion, and you’ll be destined for success.

What is PG?

PG stands for Post-Graduate and is offered as an additional year of study, after grade 12.

The Ontario curriculum is designed so that students complete their diploma requirements in 4 years. While this may be the route many students choose, some may find that 4 years limits their secondary school experience and so they may be better suited to completing a 5th or Post-Graduate (PG) year.

There are many reasons why students may choose to complete a PG year. Students may choose to study for an additional year to improve their grades before applying for university or to take additional courses that are needed for a particular post secondary course.

Why would I choose to do a Post-Graduate year?

Broadening Course Choices and University Options
A Post-Graduate year will allow you to take a broader range of courses. If you are not sure of your career direction, you can take courses in several different streams if you have more time to complete your diploma requirements.

Enrichment opportunities
Albert College promotes a well-rounded education that includes Arts, Athletics Active Citizenship and Adventure. A Post-Graduate year will allow you to explore one or more of these areas in depth as you complete your academic courses. You may also want to participate in academic enrichment such as Advanced Placement (AP) courses and the Post-Graduate year will facilitate this choice.

English Language Development
If English is your second language, you may need a longer period of time to develop your communication skills. With greater demands being placed on ESL students in terms of university admissions, a Post-Graduate year will give you the time and possibly a lighter course load to become competent in your use of the English language.

What should I do if I am considering a Post-Graduate year?

If you are considering applying to Albert College and are interested in the Post-Graduate year please contact the Admission Office at (613) 968-5726 or info@albertcollege.ca for more information.

Congratulations Class of 2011!

Forty-four students representing 13 countries graduated from Albert College on Saturday during their 153rd convocation. Thirty-seven graduates received their diplomas as Ontario Scholars achieving an 80 percent average or above and 68 percent of those Ontario Scholars were also Albert College Scholars achieving a 90 percent average or above. 7 graduates were also honoured by graduating with distinction achieving an average of 75 percent or above in all subjects in grades 11 and 12 and who have received their Arts and Activities Senior “A” and their Athletics Senior “A” and a Silver Community Service Pin.

Surrounded by family and friends, the class of 2011 gathered with their classmates outside Albert College’s 160 Dundas Street West location to celebrate their many achievements. The College’s top convocation awards were awarded to students from Belleville – all of whom have attended the college for 11 years or more.

Albert College’s top female award, The Howard Award, was presented to the finest representative female student in the graduating class, Madori Sakamoto, who was also the 2011 valedictorian. Madori has attended Albert College for 11 years beginning in the Junior School in Grade 2. She graduated with distinction, as an Ontario and Albert Scholar, and was Head Prefect this year which is the top student leadership position at Albert College.

In her valedictory address, Madori reflected on her and her fellow graduates’ time at Albert College – whether it be 1 year or 12 years. “I’ve often heard that ‘Beginnings are hard, endings are usually sad, but it’s what happens in the middle that counts’. Whether our beginning at AC started twelve years ago at the old Junior School, or just 10 months ago at Camp Tamakwa, I hope that somewhere along the way we laughed, we grew and we found our own place in the history of Albert College.” Madori will study Forensic Science at Laurentian University in the Fall.

For the second time in the school's history, Albert College awarded The Marsh Award to two recipients as the finest male representatives of the graduating class to Andrew Aulthouse and Ian Dickinson.

Andrew Aulthouse graduated with distinction, as an Ontario and Albert College Scholar, and has been a day student at Albert since Grade 1. His most notable achievement, this year, was his recognition by the Governor General of Canada for earning his Duke of Edinburgh Gold Pin. In September, Andrew will study Politics at Queen's University.

Ian Dickinson graduated with distinction, as an Ontario and Albert College Scholar and, like Andrew, came to Albert in Grade 1. Throughout his time at Albert, Ian has been involved in every aspect of school life. He has earned all three Albert College community service pins and amassed in excess of 300 hours of community service work. As Arts Prefect this year, he has provided excellent leadership for the school. In September, Ian will begin the Business program at McGill University.

Andrew Doxtator was the recipient of two top athletic awards, The Pete Beach Award and Class of ’49 Most Outstanding Athlete. “Andrew has been a dynamic force in athletics for his entire 12 years at Albert College,” said Athletic Director, Colin Gulliver. Andrew’s devotion to athletics is second only to his focus on his academics which is reflected in obtaining the Governor General’s Academic Medal for the highest standing in Grade 12 and Ontario and Albert College Scholar status. Next year, Andy will study Energy Systems Engineering at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and also plans to try out for their varsity hockey team.

Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award!

Grade 12 student, Andrew Aulthouse received his Gold Duke of Edinburgh award from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, the Governor General of Canada at The Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award was founded in 1956 by His Royal Highness, The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh K.G. K.T. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a program that encourages youth to be active, to participate in new activities and pursue current interests in four different areas - community service, personal skill development, physical recreation and adventurous journey.

Andrew is a day student and has represented the school as Adventure Prefect this year. Andrew has earned his gold award through participating in a number of different outdoor adventure and active citizenship trips including, a canoe expedition through Algonquin Park, whitewater rafting on the Madawaska River, Community Service trip to Ecuador and winter camping on Baptiste Lake to name a few.

Following the Toronto ceremony, Andrew had an opportunity to speak with his Excellency at a private reception. “The Governor General told me and a few of the other recipients a story about himself growing up in the Sault St Marie. He gave credit to the opportunities he was presented and the people who encouraged him as a young boy,” said Andrew. “One of the many people who have helped me reach my goals is Kirby Fredericks (Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator).”

The Duke of Ed program at Albert College allows students, both boarding and day, from grades 7 to 12 to step outside their comfort zone and try something new. Andrew will be graduating from Albert on Saturday, June 18 alongside 43 fellow graduates and will be attending Queen’s University in the Fall. Congratulations, Andrew!

What is a Prefect?

A prefect is a graduating student (in either their grade 12 year or Post Graduate) who is elected by their peers, teachers and the staff of Albert College. The prefect team (usually 8 – 10 students) is selected to represent the school in a number of different roles and work together as a team. This role may also be referred to as a 'student council' in the public school system. The roles of the Prefect team are divided into categories according to Albert's 5 A's (with the exception of Academics) - Arts, Athletics (and House League), Active Citizenship (Community Service) and Adventure - as well as, Admissions and Development, Social, Chapel, Graham Hall and Victoria Manor.

What qualities make a good Prefect?

Dedication to the philosophy, traditions and values of Albert College

Role modeling excellence for the entire school community

Maturity and a consistent desire to do one’s best academically

Willing participation in co-curricular activities

Respect for all members of the school community

Reliability, honesty, courtesy, sincerity

Enthusiasm and willingness to build positive school spirit

Strong organizational skills

Being a Prefect is fun too! With the leadership of the Social Prefect, the Prefect team organizes fun weekend trips to Canada’s Wonderland and shopping at the Eaton Centre in Toronto. They also plan school dances, talent shows and movie nights. The Adventure Prefect assists with all things Adventure! From helping to plan the next Duke of Edinburgh trip to talking with parents and students at open houses about how fun the Adventure Program is.

The Prefect team plays a vital role in school life for boarding and day students alike. Voting for the Prefect team is a right that comes with much responsibility. Students, faculty and staff have cast their votes. The votes have been collected and counted and next year’s prefects will be announced in the coming days. Stay tuned for the announcement… coming soon!
