EPLC and Junior School

(Pre-K to Grade 6)

Developing strong foundations and a love for learning is an important part of what we do at the Early Primary Learning Centre (EPLC) and the Junior School.  A mix of tradition, innovation, and inquiry that is student-directed, provides them with support and challenges them to achieve their best.

Using the Ontario Curriculum as a guide to assist the transition for students joining us at anytime, we have the flexibility to offer programming that motivates our students’ interests allowing for more meaningful connections and deeper learning.  An early introduction to French and instrumental music, as well as a promotion of nature, and large scale performances are just a few ways that the Albert College experience differs from other educational options. These provide opportunities for students to engage in music, arts, literacy development and enhance their self-confidence. Please be sure to read more about the Albert EPLC and Junior School program in our Life at Albert section under the other four ‘A’s: ArtsAthleticsActive Citizenship and Adventure

Special showcase events where parents are invited into the classroom to share in their child’s learning highlight the importance of integration across numerous academic strands.

Pre-Kindergarten

Albert College offers a Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) program for children 2.5 to 3 years old. The Pre-K program shares space with the Junior Kindergarten program in our EPLC located at 28 Highland Avenue.

The purpose of the Pre-K program is to focus on the development of the whole child – physical, social, emotional, spiritual and intellectual – in preparation for early and ongoing success in our formal Junior and Senior Kindergarten.

Pre-K students experience active, experiential learning through play and a comprehensive, integrated curriculum of carefully-planned and child-centred daily activities. The Albert College Pre-K program helps children develop language and communication skills and problem-solving skills as they learn to cooperate with others and make new friendships in a small and caring family environment. The evolution and development of our Pre-K program will continue to be driven by the school’s core values of individuality, teaching excellence and participation.

What are Parents saying about Pre-Kindergarten at Albert College?

"My daughter is learning French, singing, playing in the gym, spraying fire hoses on field trips, eating delicious varied meals, and still taking time for a snooze. What's not to love? The small class size creates a much more enriched experience than a daycare or preschool. My daughter loves it... a lot!" - Jennifer and Bob Webster, Pre-K Parents

"My daughter was ready for something more than daycare and that is what she found at Albert College - a classroom that fostered individual development in a stable environment. Her creative side really came out and basic skills were taught right from day one. Within the first week our daughter was speaking French to us! Her teachers are very interested in her as an individual and the amount of personal attention she receives is the reason we will continue to send her to Albert." - Leslie Pallant, Pre-K Parent

Senior Kindergarten

My daughter thinks every day at school is awesome. I drop her off each morning confident that she is safe and well cared for. Knowing that she has a wonderful teacher who is encouraging and kind, and that she is fed delicious, nourishing snacks and lunches makes ME feel awesome too. Now, if only I could have lunch at Albert College too…” – Elizabeth Saunders, SK Parent

Senior Kindergarten (SK) is offered at Albert College on a full-time basis in a state-of-the-art specially designed classroom space located at the Parrott Junior School on Albert’s main campus at 39 Parker Street.

When children arrive for Senior Kindergarten, many of them will be embarking on their first-ever experience of “full-time” schooling. Students will join their counterparts in Grades 1 to 6 for a full slate of learning Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each week. After a year of preparation in Junior Kindergarten, we are convinced that these students will make the transition to full-time schooling with relative ease. We believe that full-time instruction will benefit both children and their families as the groundwork continues to be laid for success in Grade 1 and beyond.

In Senior Kindergarten, children need a warm, inviting, accepting and supervised program that will stimulate their growth and development and maintain their curiosity about learning. Our expanded full-time Senior Kindergarten program will work to further strengthen our students’ social, emotional and physical skills with varied opportunities to explore reading, writing, mathematics, science and technology, social studies and the arts. Senior Kindergarten students are introduced to the latest technology and enjoy using classroom iPads to document their learning and for teacher-supported research.

In addition, the SK program offers daily French instruction and physical education. Our music program at the College is nurtured and valued beginning in Pre-K and JK. Our music specialist ensures a quality age-appropriate program that honours the rich tradition of musical and personal development.

Learning Outside the Classroom:

Students participate in various excursions to complement their classroom learning. Primary students (grades 1 to 3) generally do not venture outside of the local area. Junior students (grades 4 to 6) may travel as far as Toronto on special trips. There are usually a limited number of spaces available for parents to accompany students on class outings. Interested individuals are encouraged to speak directly to the classroom teacher. Every effort is made to give all interested parents a chance to chaperone at some point during the year.

After School Athletics & Activities:

Aside from weekly physical education classes, all students are encouraged to become involved in after-school athletics and school life at the Parrott Junior School. Various sports and activities are offered (subject to interest and staff availability) throughout the school year. Various lunch time athletics and activities are offered throughout the year as well. The following list is a sample of some of the after school athletics and activities which are offered: choir, cross-country running, track and field, chess club, basketball, soccer and intramural games.
