Senior Photography
1st Place
Venice
Naisha, Grade 11
The judges at one point asked about all of the photographs that they were seeing from Italy, when I told them that it was a school trip they thought it must have been a wonderful trip with so many great photographs entered into the show! With Naisha’s photograph they said that it really evokes the feeling of being in Venice. The balance of composition with the buildings from left to right and the great area of brightness in the centre that is reflected in the water below the bridge.
Honourable Mention
Pigeon
Cassia, Grade 12
What initially captivates one's attention in Cassia’s photograph is the architecture of this building with its archway detail. We admire the patterns and colours of the stonework and the water lapping up the steps. As the archway and stairs lead us into the photograph we then see the curving alleyway, giving us a great sense of depth. Then we have the surprise and addition of the pigeon standing in the alley, adding a fun aspect to this architecture study.
2nd Place
Absent
Noah, Grade 12
The judges commented on both the colours of Noah’s photograph, with the shiny gold areas and muted browns and greens, and also the feeling that they got from this work. Without even knowing the title of his photograph they spoke about the feeling of loneliness and how it looked like a forgotten or abandoned place.
Honourable Mention
Peacock
Olivia, Grade 12
The judges felt Olivia’s photograph stood out because of how much it zoomed in to show us the details of the peacock feathers. They felt as though not many of us would have ever noticed this before, or seen a peacock feather like this and they were pleased that through her photograph we can really observe and appreciate the colours and the wonderful textures.
3rd Place
Assisi
Hazel, Grade 11
Hazel’s photograph showing two closely standing buildings attracted the judges with its contrasting feeling of being both crowded by the buildings on the left and right and then the wide open space and freedom that we can see off in the distance through the centre. This photograph has interesting textures in the stones of the buildings along with the directional lines of the building and the clouds in the sky.

Mito
Greyson, Grade 12
The judges were impressed with the detailed work and technical skill of Greyson’s drawing. They commented on the great use of value and shading. The judges were especially focussed on the way that the eyes were drawn and shaded, making it seem as though they are really looking out at you from the drawing.
2nd Place
Antique Bookstore
Ava, Grade 11
The longer you look at this work the more details you will notice and Ava has included many interesting details to observe. The judges commented on her nice choice of colours and her painting skills with watercolour. They liked the way that she used perspective, leading us into this room that is filled with all of its amazing details.
3rd Place
Six Sides of Me
Skye, Grade 11
The judges were impressed to see a sculpture entry in the senior category and chose Skye’s self-portrait for its symbolism and all of the three-dimensional components and details in her artwork. Looking at the overall shape we can see the portrait silhouette and outline from a distance, and you are drawn in and when moving closer there is so much more to see. They were very interested in learning more about the artist by viewing their work.
Junior Category
1st Place
Age of Exploration
Ella, Grade 10
The judges felt that Ella’s artwork was highly energetic with the great arrangement of colours and shapes throughout. The details of the boats felt like a great addition to what at first a seemed to be an abstract artwork. The judges felt this is a highly expressive work and were impressed with her ability and skill in cutting and placing the individual pieces of glass.
Honourable Mention
Good Morning
Noah, Grade 9
The judges thought that the wide range of values in Noah’s photograph make it memorable and visually striking. It creates a great feeling of depth, firstly with the darker trees in the foreground, then the misty foggy area in the middle ground and then on to the hills and lighter mountain range far off in the distance – each layer leads us farther and farther into the landscape of this photograph.
2nd Place
Creamer Meets Elephant
Isabella, Grade 10
The judges observed the creative choice of an elephant as the animal shape that was discovered and slowly emerged from the simple jug. They complimented Isabella on her pencil shading, stating that it shows a great range from lights to darks which really holds your interest and keeps your eyes moving around the piece.
3rd Place
Vatican
Ana, Grade 9
Timing and placement are everything in photography, and in this photograph Ana has certainly achieved both. The judges marvelled at her being able to catch the silhouette of the bird in her image and to have it so perfectly placed. They liked the overall composition with the main focus of the large building off centre and how she is using the rule of thirds, with the buildings taking up the bottom third of the photograph and the brightly contrasting sky and clouds taking up the top two thirds.
Middle School
1st Place
My Story Still Life
Casey, Grade 8
The judges recognized Casey's technical skill. Her work shows excellent attention to detail with its beautiful shading and pencil work. This drawing shows that Casey is a keen observer and has an eye for detail. Like many of the other entries in the Middle School category, the judges felt like they really learned a lot about the artist from their choices of objects in this still life arrangement.
Honourable Mention
Inside My Head
Miranda, Grade 7
The judges were impressed with Miranda’s painted self-portrait. Her bold choices of colour throughout and her dynamic use of shapes has created an interesting and well-composed image. The contrast between left and right sides of her painting, as well as the many details and symbolism that she has used in her artwork, really caught their interest.
2nd Place
Portrait of an Artist Emily, Grade 7
Although this carefully drawn portrait looks simple, it is full of meaning. The left side show an expressionless face, expertly painted. While the right side’s clever outline mirrors the shape of the hair and face, it also is being filled with interesting imagery and symbolism. The judges appreciated Emily’s technical skills in this portrait painting.
3rd Place
Self Portrait
Gillian, Grade 7
In Gillian’s painting the judges thought that her slightly off-centre composition, with the bubble surrounding the portrait slightly raised to the top and a bit to the left, has created a very interesting appearance. With the face placed in the centre of the composition while simultaneously it has the feeling of being off centred. There is great contrast between the dark background and the bright outlines and symbols in this artwork.
