Albert College Welcomes Pride Sidewalks on Campus

BELLEVILLE – Albert College student-led AC-tivist committee is pleased to announce the installation of two new pride sidewalks on campus. The first pride sidewalk is located at the Senior School leading to the staff parking lot, and the second is on the sidewalk connecting the Senior and Junior School buildings.

To celebrate pride with a symbol of the LGBTQ+ community, the AC-tivist committee initiated the pride sidewalks last October. Students then raised money through bake sales and various inclusivity initiatives throughout the year for the installation.

“As a small school, it is hard to envision the kind of impact we can have on both the local and global community, but the active citizenship program here at Albert College is thriving,” says Faith Saar ’19, the co-founder of the AC-tivist committee and 2018-19 Active Citizenship prefect at Albert College. “Students are always looking for ways to contribute.”

The AC-tivist committee is made up of students interested in making change within the Albert College community and meet weekly to discuss issues they are passionate about. “This year the focus of the committee was on LGBTQ+ rights, awareness and acceptance,” says Saar.

Installed by local business Pavement Pros, the installation is part of various initiatives held by the committee to raise awareness about the LGBTQ+ community.

“Other activities we did this year were a pride-themed day to coincide with kindness week, an accompanying presentation from past Albert College board member and transgender advocate Erin LeBlanc and designing and constructing a mural as a reminder about equality regardless of race, gender or sexuality,” says Saar. “By reaching out to members of the Albert College family and working with the staff, our pride initiatives were successful because it started conversations relating to the LGBTQ+ community.”
