Leadership

Leadership opportunities aren’t just for adults. At Albert College, they start as early as Pre-Kindergarten and become ingrained in our program until graduation. Whether it’s a Kindergarten student engaging in outdoor play, a Junior School student collaborating on a group project, or a Grade 12 student managing a school club, each experience builds confidence and important life skills. These moments give students the chance to practise communication, responsibility, problem-solving and teamwork in fun and meaningful ways. By encouraging leadership at every age, AC students discover their voice, grow their confidence and prepare to make a positive impact in their school and community.
Kindergarten (PK, JK and SK)
Our youngest learners have a natural inclination to wonder about the world, to play and to develop kind and caring hearts. Our youngest students learn that being a leader is about appreciating different points of view, being able to work collaboratively together and being attuned to each other’s needs.

Leadership activities in Pre-Kindergarten to Senior Kindergarten:
- Through provocations inspired by outdoor discovery and field trips and their own individual wonderings, students appreciate the importance of building knowledge as a community of learners.
- Students experience a variety of types of play through student-driven projects, cooperative games and risky play, where they are challenged to extend their skills through climbing and jumping in outdoor settings. Through play, students learn how effective communication skills can lead to productive collaborations.
- As students develop their own sense of identity and empathy through books, discussions and activities, students are given classroom responsibilities so that they can role model inclusive behaviours and contribute to creating an environment of belonging.

Primary Division: Grades 1 to 3
Our Grade 1 to 3 students begin to appreciate the power of being part of a knowledge-building community. By learning together, students discover and teach each other new ideas and skills. Importance is placed on leading with kindness and respect as the development of interpersonal skills and emotional regulation allow our primary students to become role models at Albert College.
Leadership activities in Grades 1 to 3:
- Multi-aged peer group opportunities such as music productions, book buddies, chess club, eco club and golfing as well as a variety of field trips off-campus allow students to grow and lead through collaborative ventures.
- Students learn how to foster an environment of kindness and inclusion by practising diplomacy and conflict resolution.
- Through listening to each other’s opinion pieces and speeches and practising behaviours associated with being respectful and responsible, students learn to value the uniqueness of every individual and the strength that diversity brings to the collective.

Junior Division: Grades 4 to 6
As students advance to the Junior division, they are entrusted with significant leadership opportunities such as coordinating school-wide events. They are called upon to lead by being role models and to embrace challenges with courage and commitment.
Leadership activities in Grades 4 to 6:
- Students model leadership by being lunch monitors, buddies with younger students and running events such as Camp Day and Earth Day. Grade 6 students further commit to a year-long leadership program that includes running assemblies, creating active citizenship opportunities and promoting green initiatives.
- A variety of challenges are introduced, such as learning to play a new instrument, creating programs to make robots move and speaking in front of the greater community at the Candlelight Carol Service.
- Students learn about courage and commitment as they organize and/or participate in events such as the Terry Fox run, the Walk for Wenjack and Jump Rope for Heart.

Middle School
In Middle School, leadership is exemplified by taking the initiative to explore and discover new things about the world, themselves and each other. By doing so, students expand upon their capacity to be open-minded and to lead with empathy, compassion and confidence.
Leadership activities in Grades 7 and 8:
- Adventure opportunities such as out-of-city sports trips, multi-day camping trips to Algonquin Park, and tree-top trekking enable students to explore (and push themselves beyond) their comfort zone.
- Students engage in meaningful self-discovery through year-long leadership courses, on-going core values and learning skills reflections, athletic and artistic commitments, and events such as investigating a topic of interest in a speech competition.
- Empathy and self-confidence continue to develop as students take part in the Gleaners Food drive, raising awareness and funds for Grace Inn and collectively choosing, learning about and organizing an awareness and fundraising campaign for a Canadian not-for-profit organization.

Grades 9 and 10
Grade 9 and 10 students are guided towards experiencing Five A opportunities that build leadership skills through taking healthy risks, and in doing so, discovering strengths. As they grow into their own sense of individuality, they learn how to lean into and develop collective potential.
Leadership activities in Grades 9 and 10:
- The Duke of Edinburgh program provides a broad range of rich adventures and students are encouraged to push past their comfort zone through these activities. Other day and multi-day experiences include camping, skating, skiing and participating in the arts program.
- Students continue to discover inner strengths by participating in math, science, choral and instrumental ensemble competitions.
- By supervising younger students, co-coaching sports and participating in buddy programs, students learn about themselves, shift perspectives and learn to value the needs of others.
- Whether working on a skit, team sports, or participating in clubs, students learn to adopt a positive mindset, and be open-minded, inclusive and encouraging for group success.

Grades 11 and 12
During their final years at Albert College, students are given ample opportunity to apply their accumulated leadership skills. They recognize the importance of celebrating individuality, encouraging inclusivity and valuing integrity. By respecting others’ opinions, being innovative, finding common ground, taking responsibility and making sacrifices, they transcend their individuality and connect with others to meet collective goals.
Leadership activities in Grades 11 and 12:
- Prefects work closely with faculty and staff mentors to hone their leadership skills, with portfolios dedicated to enhancing the Five A’s and community involvement.
- Students serve on a variety of committees including for camp, mock trial, Model United Nations, the graduating class, and ACT (Activism, Community involvement and Team-building).
- Continued mandatory involvement in Five A’s activities allow students to learn how integrity and inclusion take shape on various platforms such as on a basketball court or when organizing a school social event. Being of service to others ultimately helps our students learn how to become leaders with character, ready to embrace of life of purpose with compassion.
